What do we do here? imageWhat do we do here? image
In early 1977 Fantasy Forest (a cosmetics team working in Victorville California lead by Harold Goldbrandsen) was contacted by Gene Landrum. Gene was trying to find teams and companies to make the characters but fantasy Forest responded first. Nolan and Gene Aimed for  a “soft rat” (Soon to be known as the Big C himself, Chuck E. Cheese)  for a mascot costume and animatronics (along with other characters like Jasper and soon to be munch) based off the concept drawings made by Bob Flimonte and a man Rob (both worked for Atari as some of Nolan’s team members came from Atari). They met up in Sunny vile and discussed plans and designs for the characters. Harold Goldbrandsen and Fantasy Forest worked alongside Larry Emmonds and his team to make the bots. The bots were made of fiberglass, cloth, latex rubber, and used pneumatic technology for their movements.  In May 17th, 1977 on 370 south Winchester boulevard, the very first pizza time theatre opened with the bots. According to Michael D. (Last name censored for privacy) the bots were only partly stilted in their movements and were only looking “mildly off” but still keeping the whole “animal theme”. In early 1978 the honey bun footage was made, showcasing the bots and were shown to have flaws such as chucks mouths not moving and Jasper's hand being cracked off. This is cause these were technically prototypes and one of them belongs to Travis of showbizpizza.com, here is the footage https://youtu.be/hNei4Rq6KZ8

In November 1978,on Kooser Road San Jose another Pizza time Theatre opened and had another set of Fantasy Forest bots. These models were a lot more cleaner and did not break down as much and had cleaner designs. More accurate to the illustrated designs featured around the restaurants. You can see them perform here in this footage made in 1979 for a television show called "Real People" (special thanks to CEC Nevada) https://youtu.be/EdKLsomLbtY. they were so well made most likely due to the higher budget.

Lets skip 5 years later, the year is 1984. Nolan Bushnell (the founder of CEC) leaves the company after Gene does the same. Since at that point, Showbiz pizza place took over. sadly, in 1985 the Winchester location was closing and got rid of the original Fantasy forest portrait bots. It wasn't until the last second where Jul Kamen was able to save Jasper, Pasqualy, and Chuck at the cosmetics shop in Milpitas . Kooser as well had to get rid of them and soon, all bots were destroyed or stored away. One of the bots (Gen 1 Chuck) was saved from corp by none other than Harold Goldbransen. According to Travis of showbizpizza.com, A crusty prototype was given to a man named Paul Linden. Paul is believed to be from the showbiz side since he did not know who Crusty was and he did not know that he was in the Winchester location. After another few years, Jul had an agreement with CEC corporate in 1997 about having the bots rest at headquarters. according to showbizpizza.com "sometime around the time of the bankruptcy Jul Kamen got the three portrait bots. She wound up moving from CA to TX and went to work for ShowBiz once they acquired PTT in the merger. They were talking about making a little museum at the HQ in Irving and she let them borrow her portraits to put on display. Had contracts saying if they ever gave up on the idea that the bots would revert back to her. This was in the late 80s. She left the company in 91 I think and somehow all that was forgotten about. So when they remodeled in 2004 Gene Cramm gave the order to get rid of them (and per company policy, that means destroy them). That’s where Jasper and Pasqually met their doom. Chuck would have been destroyed too except the guys in Dept 18 snuck him away and had him installed in a tucked away place in their department"

After that, Jul gave the bots away to Gabe (pizzacam) in 2005 Who had the Big C until 2012. According to Gabe, It wasn't easy owning chuck. Chuck needed to be installed and he didn't have enough room to keep him so he sold Chuck to Travis, the man, the myth, the legend. According to Travis, "In 2012 I came into contact with Paul Linden who told me he had Crusty (which he believed was a prototype character that was never used). Paul was from the ShowBiz side so he must not have realized that Crusty was indeed used at the first store. Anyway he was getting ready to move and didn’t want to take it so he sold it to me for $1200, which included the original character artwork as well. It was quite a steal honestly". when receiving the bots, the bots needed to be restored. But luckily as of now, they are fixed and look nearly perfect with a few things needing to be changed and fixed. thanks Travis!

Fantasy forest was a local special effects shop located in Victorville California. The company was owned by Harold Goldbrandson and made other animatronic characters and displays between the early 70s to late 1979.There is a timeline, discussing what happened to the company through out the years made by Howies.net Harolds personal website. Soon after creating the iconic Chuck E. Cheese characters in 1979, Harold moved on to run the facility in which the cyberamic model of CEC animatronics were made. After a while the Cyberamics were passed on to another company and soon Harold left CEC and in 1985 he took the Generation 1 portrait Chuck Animatronic. Later in 2012, Harold was contacted by fans and agreed to appear in Cheesevention 9 (A fan event that concluded in 2013).  Gen 1 Chuck is still with Harold til this day and Harold is still going good after all these years.

Cyberamics are the next set of animatronics in the lineup of bots CEC have ordered throughout the years/ Based off the portrait bots made by fantasy forest. (NOT ALL INFO HAS BEEN COLLECTED YET.....I mean- it is ver.3)
The Winchester location isn't just home to the portrait bots but is the VERY FIRST Chuck E. Cheese ever made. Lets start at May 17th, 1977. The first Pizza time theatre opens and it was packed. According to Nolan himself in Great Big Story, "the place wasn't big enough" and it wasn't! According to Michael D (someone who has been to the  Winchester location) 'it wasn't that big but it sure was crowded, kids everywhere'. with the portrait stages and arcade rooms, it was a hit. but as I have stated before; it was small. even though it had many rooms, There were people even waiting outside. Looking at the pictures it looks wide and is a rectangular building. and the show room did not have the custom carpet but instead Laminate brick flooring. Also according to Michael about the food, "the pizza? it was average at best and it wasn't very plush, like Costco. It was like a more like slightly better little Cesar's". The bots were also described as stilted. for more details on those go on the "PORTRAIT BOTS" section. Anyways, The Winchester location was just very basic in some elements but still successful. It wasn't until 1985 where it closed. And the only a few bots were saved while many other things were either stored away or destroyed. This may be updated through the weeks but until then, this is all we got. 370 South Winchester Boulevard is the address. It was Demolished in 2002 with the google maps photo coming from 2001.  It was then rebuilt a year later and was then Demolished again in 2018. The new construction can be seen here:  https://youtu.be/4nwxkglRGlk . The Building was designed by Gene Landrum. A CEC fan and archivist Pasqnotrook (aka Pasq)  Met up with Gene in February 2020. Gene showed Pasq the blueprints that are seen here. Go follow Pasq on social media please, this man is legendary. Sadly. for how historic the store is the location barley gets the recognition it deserves. Mostly being over shadowed by the famous 3 story location over on Tully Road. Gaining the "The first store". Even Though the Tully Rd. location opened in 1981.

The Iconic 3 story location (AKA the formal Chuck E. Cheese university) opened in 1981. The store is known for being the biggest CEC in the USA and is located in San Jose, California. The building itself was made in 1971 and was originally King Normans Toy store. But soon closed and became the now famous CEC. Because of it being so big and it being open for so long they gained the title as the first CEC even though that's false. The store is (for the most part) a Normal CEC but simply bigger. IT also has 2 displays outside featuring some décor and also has 2 stories hidden from the public. That being some of the 2nd floor and the entire 3rd floor. Overtime they kept many storage in the 3rd floor but over time they got rid of some of that storage. in storage they kept many things. They use to have many old and retro items dating back from when they opened. but slowly got rid of them for more space and so they can make extra cash. The store was also a CEC university of sorts. Many managers in training would go there and...Train! But soon that stopped and so did many other things, like their animatronic show. When they opened they had the iconic Balcony stage. They kept The stage until 2002 where they updated and got a Studio C. They kept the cyberamic Chuck and overtime upgraded him as a decoration of sorts out on one of the display windows. The other bots were sold to other collectors. The Studio C lasted up until 2019 where they got the infamous 2.0 update. removing the bot with nota dancefloor but much rather a flat screen TV. The Studio C chuck is currently up on the 3rd floor and as of 2021 the cyberamic is also gone being sold to a fan. When 2020 Hit the store volunteered to close based on city guidelines and sold some of their treasured items to make up for the cash as they lost. They lost over 600,000$ in one year alone during 2020. but thanks to the covid vaccine there seems to be high hopes.
The Iconic statue in the back made by Jeff Tritel was commissioned way back in 1977 as a mini bronze statue but for the Tully store was made bigger. The small version is owned by collector Kobun and is doing fine. as of 2021 the big statue is also safe and sound.
Secret pizza society image
Shrouded in mystery and secrecy, The secret pizza society is the 99 cent store equivalent of the Mafia. working together to preserve as much as they can when it comes to old pizza time media. One of their major specialties is the portrait bots and the study of "Portraitology".a form of studying of old technology similar to the tactics used by Harold Goldbransen and his team fantasy forest which formed and documented by one of the fellow society members. The team has come a long way since it was founded in late 2020. Over some time and many hardships they were able to create the portrait replicas (Which are still in production) and this lovely website with the help of their many friends and allies.
RICK RAT imageRICK RAT image
Rick Rat was the original name and character of Chuck E. Cheese. The character was based on a Rat mascot walk around costume bought in the early 70s by Nolan Bushnell who originally thought he was a coyote. the costume itself comes from (at this moment) Mysterious origins with the original manufacture unknown. with the only other info being he was sold at an IAAPA Expo and there was another suit sold down in Colorado (Seen in the second photo). And even then the other customer mistook the suit as a coyote. But when it comes to CEC, Nolan used the suit as an unofficial mascot of sorts to ATARI.  Once Pizza Time Theatre was kick started, the Rat head stayed with the team and was at the corporates office until 1985 where they moved their operations to Texas. At this current moment the rat sits in department 18.
